Keratoconus - What is it?
Hello,
My name is Drew Thompson and I am a practicing Optometrist in the North West of England with a special interest in contact lenses and corneal disorders. I have created this website as an informative guide for those with irregular cornea conditions. The information held within this site is merely meant to inform the reader. I created it in an attempt to use my knowledge, gained after many years of practice, and methodology of treatment of keratoconus and other conditions. I have a very active role in the treatment pathway of those with anterior eye conditions through my voluntary work in the hospital eye service. I intend to help educate the public with regard to corneal disease, helping them to understand the conditions better and which treatments options are appropriate.
My decision to do this has has been bourne out of many years of patients asking for more detail about their condition. If you would like further information or have any queries feel free to contact me using the form provided on the contact us page.
Many thanks
Drew

Contact Lenses for the Irregular Cornea
In some circumstances contact lenses are a necessity to achieve good vision and are not just a cosmetic concern for people with complicated prescriptions, corneal distortion created after infection, keratoconus or other dystrophy and ocular trauma. This includes distortion induced post-operatively. Contact lenses can often be the only treatment available to restore the vision back to something close to "normal".
I am an Optometrist in the North West of England who specialises in these type of contact lenses. I have put this website together to offer some answers to the frequently asked questions I get from many of my patients. I hope that this is a useful resource for those who need it. By far the largest group of people that are dependent on these lenses are those with Corneal Ectasia. This is a medical term for the distention or distortion of the corneal surface. The catagory of ectasia which is most common is keratoconus, which has an incidence varies depending on the data used but it is somewhere between 10 and 600 in 100,000, so it is quite rare. I am available for both private and NHS (Blackpool NHS area only) patients and can offer advice and contact lens fitting. You can contact me using this form. |

I have merely collected together my knowledge from years of dealing with patients and managing their care with the local hospital eye service. This site was devised as an aid to help my patients gain more knowledge about their condition. If you have any concerns about the information held within, please contact us using this form or speak with your Optometrist or Surgeon for clarification**
